Why are The Slate Caverns a great place for educational visits? School trips to The Slate Caverns in the heart of the Welsh Mountains of North Wales are very popular. We combine history with fun making it a great memorable combination for pupils and staff. We offer two tours being the Llechwedd Deep Mine and Tour and the Quarry Explorer.Llechwedd Deep Mine
The Llechwedd Deep Mine Tour is an award winning interactive tour that brings to life the harsh reality of the Victorian slate mine industry of North Wales through its compelling digital re-telling and clever use of cutting-edge technology. Using augmented reality, light projections, video, 3D audio and special effects vividly brings to life the working men and boys who produced the slate which roofed so much of the world.
Visitors access the caverns using Britain’s steepest cable railway to levels of 500ft underground and the passionate tour guides – many of whom have local connections with the mine and whose families can be traced back to Blaenau’s past – creates great memories for our visitors.
Llechwedd Deep Mine is a place children use miner’s primitive drills and hang by chains from the chamber walls just as the men would have done over 150 years ago. They lay fuses setting off powerful blasts using a Victorian plunger - which is proving to be very popular! Visitors gasp at the real life dangermen as they bring to life one of the most death defying elements of Victorian health and safety!
Our Quarry Explorer is an off road adventure that will take you right into the heart of Llechwedd’s man-made mountains. Travelling in a military 4 x 4 truck you’ll drive up high to the top of the quarry and into some of the massive craters that were made by blasting the tops off our hundred-year-old caverns.
The Quarry Explorer adds an element of action and fun for children and adults! Learn the tale of the miner, see the land and buildings they worked above. You’ll learn more about how this amazing landscape was formed, and why it is now the subject of a UNESCO World Heritage Status bid. You’ll take in views of North Wales like no other and have the opportunity to snap some great photographs.
